Awards and Competitions
AOD students are constantly encouraged and guided to take part in local and International award programmes and competitions. Academy of Design graduates have represented Sri Lanka in many international competitions and brought glory to their country and the campus several times. These winners support AOD’s mission of creating a generation of designers who possess the ability to take Sri Lankan design to the global forefront.
We involve our students in, local and international design competitions as one of our strategies to bridge the gap between education and industry. We aim to give our students theoretical and practical knowledge that will prepare them for today’s design world.

Young Lions competition – Cannes Lions 57th International Advertising Festival 2010 where Graphics and Advertising students from all over the world take part- Samantha Weerawardane, a student of the AOD and presently a part of Sri Lanka’s dynamic graphics and advertising industry at the JWT Holdings, took part in the Print category of the Young Lions competition – Cannes Lions 57th International Advertising Festival 2010 and was chosen the winner. The winners received the opportunity to travel to France for the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival 2010 and take part in the global Young Lions competition.
It was a proud moment for us when we saw our work booth with a Sri Lankan flag on it… It was great mingling with advertising professionals of our age from different countries.

The Triumph Inspiration Award, where students from 42 prestigious international design schools in 30 countries competed to create a unique lingerie set - Yasintha Jayasekera emerged winner in the Sri Lankan National Competition from among nearly 30 students from the International Academy of Design and other institutions across the island. The winner from each country was sent forward to the grand final in Beijing on July 31st 2008 where their designs were judged by an international panel of design specialists.
Facets Sri Lanka 2010 – Academy of Design’s Jewellery Design students win multiple Awards – Harshini Wimalasiri won multiple awards and certifications in recognition of her work with diamond jewellery. Harshini won awards for the Diamond Ring and Diamond Earring categories along with certifications for Diamond Bracelet and Diamond Pendent categories. Muna Rizwan emerged the runner up among many contestants for the Coloured Pendent category.
AOD was the beginning of my design education and it was the AOD that led me to this achievement. AOD is definitely a pillar of strength along my path in jewellery design.

Special Award by the distinguished Italian Fashion Designer Tiziano Picogna and the ‘Be Nice’ Modelling Agency- Italy, and the opportunity to represent Sri Lanka in the Kaleidoscope Fashion Show in Italy – During the AOD graduation fashion show in 2009, three young fashion designers from AOD; Dilukshi Gayathrika Ho, Aishath Sinaya and Ranga Rathnayaka were also given the opportunity to travel to Trieste – Italy and represent Sri Lanka in the Kaleidoscope Fashion Show. The show was organized by the Be Nice Modelling Agency, Atelier Tiziano and the Municipal Council of Trieste for design students of Trieste and exclusively for AOD students representing Sri Lanka.
This was a one in a million opportunity for me and I’m proud to be one of the students to represent the Academy of Design and Sri Lanka…I got so many awesome experiences as a young designer.
